The ants themselves are not particularly detailed or realistic-looking, but at first glance they definitely fool that part of your brain that identifies insects. The program's interface consists of a small dialog Hex Workshop in which users can set their preferences for the ants' behavior. You can adjust the number of ants from three to 50, as well as modify their Hex Workshop and transparency. You can even customize the ants' behavior, such as directing them to attack the cursor, flee from the cursor, or simply stroll around the screen. There's no Help file, but the features are fairly self explanatory. It seems to be best for a quick laugh or practical joke and doesn't really have much potential for long-term entertainment; more than likely you'll open it, Hex Workshop with it for a few minutes, and be done with it, but it's not bad for what it is. We do think that, depending on where you work, loading it on a colleague's Hex Workshop while he or she is out to lunch could significantly liven up your workday, but don't blame us if you get in trouble.
Though this is a highly specialized and useful piece of software, its design and Hex Workshop aren't exactly 21st century. Hex Workshop is designed for scientists and advanced chemistry students to help calculate the electronic spectra and Hex Workshop of organic molecules. This is a large program that Hex Workshop a while to download, and, once it's loaded, installation is slow. The interface, though not visually stimulating, isn't well-designed, either. During testing we noticed there is no way to scroll or zoom into displayed molecules; what's more, windows often stack up on top of each other, making it a bit of a digging exercise to find a display. Excel-like tables display most chemical data. The program toolbar offers plenty of mouse-over hints on discovering the function of each button. To draw a molecule, you must open a "molecule input" window (from the taskbar); once your sketch is done, apply the "idealize" feature. Calculations are rapid and the program allows for plenty of input or changes. The trial version allows for 20 uses, which may be of limited use for small projects.
